Flying Sites

The BMHGC manages flying sites in the Blue Mounatins and the Central Tablelands. These include: Mt Blackheath, Wolgan Valley, Sofala and Bathurst. For a detailed site introduction and site guide contact the club. A site guide is posted Mt Blackheath takeoff with landing paddock access rules signposted at the entry gate. All sites are open to visiting pilots. These sites are suitable for launching both HG and PG with the exception of the site in the Wolgan Valley, which is unsuitable for PG. Current financial HGFA membership is compulsory for all pilots flying from these sites. This is a legal requirement for flying HG and PG in Australia. HGFA website.

Mt Blackheath is the main site for the BMHGC, however other sites are now being used again, some regularly. If you are interested in flying from these sites contact us for info. All the sites are open to visiting pilots.

Airspace

For all these sites, there is class E airspace starting at 8500 feet. Additional Airspace to the east of Blackheath/Katoomba makes flying XC towards Sydney extra challenging. In the West there are airfields that have mandatory VHF use requirements (Bathurst, Orange, Mudgee) + Pipers airfield with gliding operations. There is too much detail to list here so consult the relevant airspace charts before flying to familiarise yourself with the necessary detail.

The relevant maps are the Sydney VNC and VTC, and the Newcastle VNC for XC flying north towards Mudgee.
